WHAT IS THYROID SUPPORT?

The thyroid gland is a unique and complex organ that controls metabolism, development, and protein synthesis. It necessitates iodine supplementation and other trace elements. Normal cognitive function, metabolic rate, and calcium management are all dependent on a healthy thyroid.

VitaPost Thyroid Support is a unique blend of vitamins, minerals, and herbs that supports healthy energy levels, attention and clarity, and thyroid hormone production.

BENEFITS OF THYROID SUPPORT

There are a variety of supplements available online and in stores that claim to support or improve thyroid function. Only herbs are listed as ingredients in some recipes. Others contain dried, ground-up thyroid gland from pigs or cows in pill form.

People take the supplements because they're weary or have gained weight for no apparent reason, which they interpret as a sign that their bodies aren't producing enough thyroid hormone.

Endocrinologist Victor Bernet, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., got intrigued when a number of his patients told him they were taking the supplements. Is it possible that they include the same thyroid hormone found in Levothroid, Levoxyl, Synthroid, Unithroid, and other prescription thyroid hormone deficient medications?
Yes, argues Bernet, and it's perilous. "Even a little too much T4 can cause palpitations, atrial fibrillation, blood pressure problems, and other things," he says WebMD. "People are worried, can't sleep, have a lower exercise tolerance, and their hearts are racing."
Synthroid and other prescription medications for thyroid insufficiency include the active component T4 (thyroxine).

Bernet and colleagues put 10 supplements to the test, choosing them because they appeared to be the most popular "thyroid support" items on the market. Animal thyroid gland was specified as an ingredient in five of the goods, whereas it was not included in five others.

As a consequence, T4 was found in nine out of ten pills. Four of the pills delivered T4 at dosages ranging from 8.6 to 91.6 micrograms per day at the indicated amount on the package. According to Bernet, a normal daily dose of prescription T4 is 50 to 150 micrograms.
Another thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine, or T3, was found in nine of the supplements. Five of them administered T3 doses of more than 10 micrograms per day on a daily basis. Bernet explains, "That's more than half of what the body would ordinarily create in a day."

"Thyroid hormones should only be purchased with a doctor's prescription," Bernet advises WebMD. "I do not advise anyone to take any of these supplements," says the author. Patients should be aware that 90 percent of the products we chose at random contain clinically significant quantities of thyroid hormone.Another thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine, or T3, was found in nine of the supplements. Thyroid Support Supplements Legal

The supplements are legal as long as they aren't spiked with pharmaceutical drugs, according to federal law. That law, passed in 1994, permits the sale of "a dietary substance for use by man to supplement the diet by increasing the total dietary intake (e.g., enzymes or tissues from organs or gland)."

Supplement manufacturers must "determine" that their goods are safe and that any claims made regarding them "are verified by enough evidence to prove they are not untrue or misleading." The law, on the other hand, exempts dietary supplements from FDA approval.

"Thyroid support supplements have been around for a long time," says Duffy MacKay, ND, the Council for Responsible Nutrition's vice president for scientific and regulatory affairs. The supplement industry is represented by CRN, a trade association.

"It's completely lawful to have desiccated glands in dietary supplements," MacKay adds. "The amount of hormone in the product should be similar to what occurs naturally in the [animal] gland. Thyroid hormone levels are not excessively high."

However, MacKay claims that his remarks are confined to companies that "follow the rules." "Spiked supplements posing as supplements," he says.

WebMD's request for comment on the Bernet study findings was not responded to by the FDA.

Thyroid support products, according to Bernet, should be more strictly monitored. Bernet has the right to his view, according to MacKay, but if he wants things changed, he should write to his congressman and ask for a change in federal law.

However, MacKay and Bernet agree on at least one significant point: anyone considering taking a thyroid support supplement should consult a physician before doing so, and make sure to inform all of their doctors.
